In previous blogs we’ve made mention of how our materials are used in medical devices across the globe, but where can you actually see them in action? Whether you specialize in manufacturing individual medical device components or fully-functional OEM devices, there’s a place where our precision ground products could be the perfect fit. In today’s blog, we explore a multitude of medical marvels that are made possible by precision materials like those we deliver to our customers every day.
Many medical conditions can only be identified with an inside look—literally. These cases call for an endoscopy, where a small camera mounted on a flexible tube is inserted into the body to get a closer look at a certain area. Endoscopy equipment can be used to inspect many different kinds of conditions, in applications from observing an area of concern before issuing a diagnosis to performing a post-operative checkup. These tools are even being used in a revolutionary approach to treating herniated discs in a minimally invasive fashion, with a resulting incision of only about 8mm.
Naturally, precision is of great importance when assembling such a complex device at such a small scale. Our precision tubes can be used for housing light sources, biopsy ports, and the distal tip where a camera lens (or multiple lenses, in some cases) is snugly fit. Creating these medical device components is simplified by AccuBlank™, our service in which precision materials are pre-cut to your desired size.

A biopsy represents a critical step in any patient’s health analysis, often serving as a precursor to a formal diagnosis. In a biopsy, a small sample of cells, body tissue, or bodily fluids is collected from a patient for further testing in a lab setting. While some biopsies may be performed with a simple scratch or scrape, others can require a much greater degree of precision to extract the right sample.
That’s where our medical device materials come in. Although Boston Centerless may be famous for our centerless ground bar, we also offer precision tubes in a variety of sizes. These tubes can be utilized in biopsy equipment like punches and needles for potentially life-saving diagnoses. Other biopsy tools, like forceps and other such instruments, may also be crafted using precision ground bar material to help medical manufacturers stay within extremely tight tolerances.
The vascular system is a delicate one, requiring extreme care and precision to safely handle. Also called the circulatory system, the vascular system is responsible for delivering blood between the heart and the body’s extremities.
One commonly used implant is a vascular stent: a small, tubular wire frame which is inserted into an artery or vein to reinforce its walls and support proper blood flow. With most stents ranging in outer diameter from just 2-5mm large, the wires which make up the mesh must be precisely shaped and sized to maintain structural integrity for long-term effectiveness and patient comfort. These are not to be confused with a stent wire, the tool which is used to deliver the stent to its intended location via a catheter.
Boston Centerless has the capabilities and expertise to craft both wires for stent delivery, and wires for stents themselves with unmatched precision.
When the skeletal system needs reinforcements, or when a bone implant needs to be placed, operators will almost always rely on bone screws. These screws are engineered for durability and comfort, and constructed using biocompatible materials like titanium and stainless steel. Material selection is critical for facilitating proper fusion and minimizing the risks of rejection from the body’s autoimmune system.
At Boston Centerless, our team has extensive experience in crafting bar stock for all kinds of bone screws using these medical device materials. Not only do we grind precision bars and blanks to your requirements—we can also assist in selecting the right medical grade alloy for your particular application. Whether you are interested in obtaining material of the finest quality, sourcing material with long-term availability for reliable supply, or finding the characteristics you need at the right cost, our team is ready to help.

Bone screws may do the trick for skeletal reconstruction, but what about when a less rigid part of the body requires care, like a tendon or ligament? Precision ground bars, tubes, and fine wires play a role in the tools used for these repairs as well. Take, for example, the procedure for replacing an anterior cruciate ligament, more commonly abbreviated as the ACL.
When replacing a soft ligament, the replacement must be anchored to the surrounding bones for stability and to achieve the proper tension. Anchoring the new ligament is no small feat. It requires the use of complex, multi-stage cannulated drills to create and size canals in the surrounding bones just right for the new ligament to fit comfortably. These cannulated drills and their inserts must be constructed with the utmost precision to deliver the intended results and minimize risk of harm to the patient. Our precision ground bars and tubes are ideal for manufacturing these surgical drills and inserts for impeccable accuracy during operations.
Those are just a few ways that Boston Centerless supports the medical industry with the precision materials it needs. Didn’t see your application listed?
