People: Our Greatest Asset for Precision Grinding

Written by Boston Centerless | Jan 30, 2024 4:16:48 PM

The team at Boston Centerless understand that recruitment and retention of the right personnel are crucial to our success and sustainability, especially since precision grinding is a specialized skill set. We make it a priority to properly train, develop, and challenge our team. But lots of companies say people are their greatest asset, so how can you tell when a company is committed to valuing its personnel? Below are a few examples of how Boston Centerless demonstrates that people are our greatest asset for precision grinding.

Additionally, at Boston Centerless, we have worked hard over the past six decades to establish a culture that is thoroughly embedded across our company, and we refer to this it as The BC Way. Within our culture, our core purpose is clear and influences every aspect of our business: to be a role model for U.S. manufacturing. As a recognized industry leader in Lean Manufacturing, we want to ensure our personnel are aligned with our core purpose and our core values: be Trustworthy, take Initiative, put the Team First, and demonstrate Excellence. Our teams understands that these values are non-negotiable, thus, it is imperative that new personnel entering our organization are aligned with, and committed to, each of these values – and for this reason we hire with the long-term in mind.

Hiring with Purpose for the Long-term

Viewing personnel as a company’s greatest asset begins with proper planning and careful selection of new hires. Every resource has an impact on the success and culture within an organization – for better or worse. Thus, every hiring decision must be taken seriously and with purpose. As a precision grinding company, we hire personnel with the long-term in mind and look for opportunities to grow our team to better serve our customers. Consistent with this objective, we recently added several new positions to better meet the needs of the various customers and industries we serve. We added several process and mechanical engineers to support our new processes as well as increased our Sales and Service presence with the addition of several key positions including a new Director of Sales, two new Regional Sales Managers, and a newly created function of Customer Demand specialist to improve our proactiveness with Blanket and Kanban orders. Our team is always looking for opportunities to improve the experience of our precision grinding customers and these are just a few recent examples of our team hiring with purpose and intentionality.

Valuing Personnel Impacts the Bottom Line

It makes good business sense to value your precision grinding personnel. In fact, research confirms that businesses that view resources as valuable assets often outperform businesses that do not. The conclusion to be drawn is that treating people as if they are your greatest asset not only empowers your personnel but has the power to improve your bottom line.

There is an enormous pool of potential when it comes to personnel performance. Like it or not, personnel performance is impacted by the degree of engagement, support, and empowerment your resources feel, often leaving volumes of potential untapped. This is why it is crucial that companies have a culture, like the BC Way, that is clear on its core values and works to empower its precision grinding personnel every single day.

Ample Personnel Training and Development Opportunities

It is no secret that most personnel desire development opportunities to expand their skills and broaden their experience. To meet these objectives, our team offers a variety of continuing education and cross-training options. We also invested in cutting-edge training technology and equipment that allows us to reduce the time to bring new technicians up to speed, no matter where they are located. Centerless grinding is a unique skill that takes time to develop so we invest in rigorous training to minimize the learning curve for our personnel. In some instances, our training is developed in-house to meet our specific needs. Our commitment to innovative and comprehensive training methods is just another example of how Boston Centerless demonstrates that people are our greatest asset for precision grinding.

Further, we know that proper development is key to personnel retention so Boston Centerless offers a range of opportunities to enable personnel to expand and grow their skillsets. One example of personnel development and recognition is that we have a large board displayed on our shop floor. Personnel receive “dots” when they become certified on a given area of grinding such as a new material or a different diameter. The more dots an employee has, the more fungible that resources is to be utilized across a myriad of machines on the shop floor. This aspect of our training program recognizes growth and development of our personnel and encourages them to stretch their technical skills and techniques – in addition to communicating that their hard work is valued and appreciated. All of which are wins that helps us retain the best talent in precision grinding.

Value Diversity

At Boston Centerless, we know diversity in our precision grinding organization comes in a variety of forms such as culture, age, gender, background, etc. We understand that diversity allows us to tap into broader range of ideas that lead to better results. Our team demonstrates our commitment to diversity in our recruitment and hiring process. Further, we display flags on the shop floor to represent the various countries of origin for our personnel – celebrating the diversity of our workforce. While we are a small company with just over 100 staff, we have around 20 flags on display. Further, some of our personnel speak English as a second language so part of the training program at Boston Centerless includes English language classes for our staff.
